Fatshark

Fatshark is a Swedish studio on Södermalm in Stockholm that designs, develops and publishes co-op action games for PC and consoles. It is best known for Warhammer: Vermintide and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. Tencent has been the majority owner since 2021; Fatshark still self-publishes and describes itself as independent in how it works.

History

Founded in 2007 by Martin Wahlund, Rikard Blomberg, Joakim Wahlström and Johan Jonker, Fatshark began as a subcontractor on AAA titles. Its first published game, the western shooter Lead and Gold, came in 2010 with Paradox Interactive. In 2009 the studio co-founded the Bitsquid engine company, later sold to Autodesk; proceeds funded the first self-published AAA title, Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide.

Tencent took a minority stake in 2019 and became majority shareholder in 2021. The studio remains based in Stockholm and ships its own games.

Games

Alongside earlier titles such as Lead and Gold, Krater and Bloodsports.tv, Fatshark’s flagship work is licensed Warhammer co-op: Vermintide, Vermintide 2, and Darktide. The games are built around succeeding or failing as a group.

Now

Darktide is in active live service. In 2026 the studio shipped the free Beyond the Hive update, including the Expeditions mode, and the Skitarii class (23 June 2026).
