On Wednesday, February 18, Sweden’s Minister for Culture, Parisa Liljestrand, will present the award for Best Game Design at this year’s Swedish Game Awards in Stockholm.
The games industry is today one of Sweden’s largest export sectors — and at the same time one of our most important cultural expressions. It represents creativity, innovation, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit that stretches far beyond entertainment.
“The cultural and creative industries, where the games sector plays a central role, are becoming one of Sweden’s new foundational industries. Video games are an important form of cultural expression. At the same time, their development involves a wide range of creative processes and provides employment for many people across different sectors in Sweden,” says Parisa Liljestrand.
In the Government’s 2024 strategy for companies within the cultural and creative industries, the importance of providing the right conditions for growth in the games sector is clearly emphasized. The games industry is also highlighted in Sweden’s 2023 strategy for foreign trade, investment, and global competitiveness. Many of the government’s broader initiatives aimed at strengthening businesses and entrepreneurship also benefit game development studios across the country.
